Why couldn't that storm that is hitting the other side of the state, and Ohio, hit by us? Man, they have all the luck. Wishing for one more ride before the snow is gone.

On days like today, as I dig my car out of snow, I think about the summer and relaxing at Big Star Lake!

Golden Bun, I used to go to the Bun with my girlfriend (now my wife) In fact we went to the Bun for for dinner the evening that we married in 1954. The buns were yellow colored inside and the fries were curly. The older gentleman would take your order, give you a number holler to his wife that he had an order and about 30 min. later your order would be called out. There was a shelter out in front with a couple of picnic tables for the patrons. If you want to restart the business we would love to crank up our model A Ford and come over for a burger.

Great job on the site and the cam! We have owned a cabin on lake Cecelia for 8 years and actually have a view of both lakes. The cabin we own was apparently a sandwich shop called the Golden Bun. I was told it was just a one room cabin back then before a second room and bathroom were added. I've heard they had great sandwiches there but I don't know much more about the place. Does anyone remember the Golden Bun and can you share that info?
Thanks.

Concerning the lake level. If the lake is kept at the current elevation as established by the court decision no cottage owners should be affected by high water. Last year the lake level by the end of the summer season was almost 1 ft lower than that established elevation. Given snowfall and anticipated runoff this spring the lake level should be back at, or a little above the elevation that was established. If this happens the gates should be opened and allowed to run until one of two things happen. 1. The lake is lowered to the established elevation or 2. The water is drained until the gates need to be closed due to water temp. rising above 68 degrees. I believe a more important concern for everyone to look at is the condition of the drainage outfall. it needs some maintenance work performed on it or we are going to have a much larger problem on our hands if this system fails and we aren't able to control the lake level. Hope this falls on the right set of ears so action can be taken.

You are correct Ric, the plastic cover blew off the thermometer a couple of weeks ago and now I think it gets moisture in it and freezes at about 25F. Have not been able to locate the plastic cover in the snow yet.

That thermometer has said the same temp. I think it is broke. It says like 25, but it is -6.

Boy this has been the best year for snowmobiling we have seen in years. The web cam lets us know how the conditions are before making the long drive from Illinois. Thanks, as we have said before, for the cam. Keep up the great work.......

To put the 829' water level in perspective, think back to mid July of last summer. On July 12, 2007 the official level was 829.08. During the warm '07 summer and dry fall the water level fell to 828.18 (12/19/07). The measurement on January 16, 2008 showed a slight increase to 828.37. Hope this helps all you Big Star Lake water level watchers!

For the people who did not own property at the lake years ago, and have since bought & built on the lower laying lots, the water level is extremely low. Thus allowing of more building in places that were not suitable for building years ago. I do remember when the lake came in 10 to 15 feet closer to our place. I have been coming to Big Star for 48+ yrs, and I want to continue enjoying the "Lake", not a puddle(like in Georgia). Big Star Lake is a natural high in today's stressful life and should always be that way! Thank you again for the Web cam! It is fun to watch the weather when I am not there!

The drain is opened as the lake level exceeds the 829' level as was established in 1986 by Judge Wickens. They resurveyed the marker last spring because some people thought the lake was too high. The markers are now totally accurate. This should be non-debatable and simply a matter of execution.
I think the "inexact science" Dick VanderMolen refers to comes into play when trying to anticipate when downstream will reach that 68 degree temperature level and how much water there will be in the lake at that point (that is, how much rain there will be in the intervening time period).
I realize I don't have a cottage close to water level, so I don't have the concerns of being flooded out, but we all certainly have to remember that without the water, BSL is nothing. Lakes do dry up. A few years ago BSL was perilously low. Georgia (practically a tropical climate)never thought they would see dried up lakes.

The water level/drain was established by a District Judge years ago. Lake County Road Commission nor the Lake Association can change the water level.

Just a comment on the lake level. There is a level that was established in the Lake County court the County Rd commision (because we don't have a drain commision) is responible for opening the drain they can only drain when the water temp. is below a certain temp.(I think it is 68) Draining the lake is not an exact science if I had some questions I would call the Township Supv. Don Britton or the Lake County Road Comm.

The lake levels are way down already. It sure was cold this weekend with great snow - I was surprised that there were not more snowmobilers around.
Thanks for the great web cam

I hope that the water is NOT drained this year (ay least not yet). It was to low last year. Wait and see what the snow level is going to be before opening the drain.

Like Jim, I'm wondering when and if the people responsible for opening the valve to release some of the water from the lake into the river are going to do it. Last years water levels were pretty high. Some peoples sea walls took hits but if it get's much higher some people could lose their cottages or the septic fields will pollute the lake

With the warm weather we have had the top 6" of ice is very unstable. Please use caution. Snowmobilers should stay off the lake until conditions improve!!
